New Zealand Invests in Natural Disaster Research
EQC Toka Tū Ake Focuses on Reducing Community Risk
WEB EQC Toka Tū Ake, formerly known as the Earthquake Commission Māori, is a New Zealand crown entity dedicated to investing in natural disaster research. With a board of nine Commissioners accountable to the Minister, EQC Toka Tū Ake aims to provide natural disaster insurance for residential properties and reduce the impact of natural disasters on communities.
ShakeOut and Tsunami Hikoi
EQC Toka Tū Ake supports initiatives like ShakeOut, a global event that raises awareness about earthquake preparedness, and tsunami hīkoi, community-led walks along tsunami evacuation routes. These programs educate the public about natural disaster risks and promote mitigation strategies.
Seismic Hazard Assessment
EQC Toka Tū Ake also collects and analyzes seismic data to assess earthquake hazards. By studying past earthquakes and modeling potential future events, the organization can identify areas at high risk of shaking and develop building codes and land use policies to reduce community vulnerability.
Review of the Earthquake Commission Act
Currently, the Earthquake Commission Act is under review to enhance the regulatory framework governing EQC Toka Tū Ake's operations. The review aims to ensure the organization is well-positioned to meet the evolving challenges of natural disaster management in New Zealand.
